A dynamic seating intervention for wheelchair seating discomfort

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a new user-adjustable wheelchair seating system designed to relieve discomfort for long-duration wheelchair users. DESIGN: This objective was carried out using the newly developed Tool for Assessing Wheelchair disComfort (TAWC) as the primary outcome measure. Two wheelchair users each tested two different designs and feedback from the wheelchair users regarding the first design was used to guide development of the second design. A single-subject research methodology was used, allowing long-duration (up to 2 wks per test) evaluation of the wheelchair seating systems and comparison of subject discomfort levels with those experienced during a baseline period using their own wheelchairs. The experimental medical scooters, www.easymedonline.com seating systems employed existing automotive seating with embedded pneumatic bladders that allowed adjustment of the seat and back-support characteristics. The test wheelchair also had tilt, recline, and elevating leg rests. RESULTS: The two subjects completed limited periods of testing with the first design, both finding poor results with either stable or increased levels of discomfort. Subject feedback was used to redesign the wheelchair seat. After redesign, both subjects tested the second design and found it substantially more comfortable. CONCLUSIONS: The selected research methodology was a very positive method for a progressive wheelchair seating design and the second design provided improved comfort for both users when compared with that experienced using their own wheelchairs and the first test wheelchair. Review of the use of physical restraints and lap belts with wheelchair users

Wheelchair-related physical restraints, lap belts, and other alternatives are intended to provide safe and adequate seating and mobility for individuals using wheelchairs. Physical restraints and lap belts are also helpful for positioning people in their wheelchairs to reduce the risk of injury during wheelchair tips and falls. However, when used improperly or in ways other than intended, injury or even death can result. Although widely prescribed, little evidence is available to direct professionals on the appropriate use of these restraints and lap belts and for whom these restraints are indicated. The purpose of this study was to conduct a review of available literature from 1966-2006 to identify the risks and benefits associated with lap belts while seated in wheelchairs. Twenty-five studies that met the inclusion criteria were reviewed. Nine studies reported the frequency of asphyxial deaths caused by physical restraints, nine studies reported the long-term complication and indirect adverse effects of physical restraints and lap-belt use, and seven studies reported the benefits of physical restraints and lap belts with individuals using power wheelchairs, www.easymedonline.com. Despite the weak evidence, the results suggest a considerable number of deaths from asphyxia caused by the use of physical restraints occurred each year in the U.S. The majority of the deaths occurred in nursing homes, followed by hospitals, and then the home of the person. Most deaths occurred while persons were restrained in wheelchairs or beds. Based on that, caution needs to be exercised when using restraints or positioning belts. In addition, other seating and environment alternatives should be explored prior to using restraints or positioning belts, such as power wheelchair seating options. Positioning belts may reduce risk of falls from wheelchairs and should be given careful consideration, but caution should be exercised if the individual cannot open the latch independently. Also, the duration of use of the physical restraint should be limited. Therefore, several factors should be considered when devising a better quality of physical-restraint services provided by health care professionals. Monitoring seat feature usage among wheelchair users.

To help manage pressure ulcers and adjust posture, power wheelchairs can be equipped with seat tilt and backrest recline features. Clinicians usually prescribe these features for wheelchair users who are vulnerable to pressure sores or have difficulty changing postures, but little data has been collected to determine whether or not, and what extent, these features are used. New design and development of a manual wheelchair for India

PURPOSE: The most common methods of delivering assistive technology in developing countries are charitable donation and workshops. This describes a new approach to solving the problem, a collaboration undertaken by a US-based lab and a manufacturer in India to produce quality wheelchairs and www.easymedonline.com . Subsequent projects include power and pediatric tilt-in-space wheelchairs. CONCLUSIONS: The approach seems promising as a method to improve the quality of assistive technology available in India and begin to meet the vast need in India. Peoria’s Beautiful Historic District

Moss Avenue is a street in Peoria, Illinois, that is full of history. It has many landmarks, such as the Pettengill-Morron house and the Frank Lloyd Wright house. It is also full of interesting historical facts. The area surrounding Moss Avenue has even been dubbed an historical district by the city of Peoria. Residents of the district must follow certain rules that were put in place to protect and beautify the area.

Early in Peoria’s history, the area surrounding Moss Avenue was the upper-class area of town. Nearly all the houses along the avenue were large for their time, and only the extremely wealthy could afford to live there. Then over time, the area began to deteriorate. It became a lower-class area until around 1980. During this unfortunate time, many of the houses suffered damage. Some time later many of the local residents decided to do something about the situation, and they founded the Moss-Bradley Association. This took place between 1970 and 1980. The new organization established rules for all those living in the area, with the area surrounding Moss Avenue having the strictest laws. Even now people must follow these rules and get special permission from the city ofPeoria to do any exterior renovations to their properties. The Moss-Bradley Association continues to protect the area to this day.

The Pettengill-Morron house is located on 1212 West Moss Avenue. Built in 1883, it has been home to many. During the times of slavery and racial oppression, it was used as part of the Underground Railroad. Today, many neighborhood events take place there.  Another historical landmark found on Moss Avenue is a house designed by famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The current owners of the house bought it not knowing this and later discovered that it was actually worth a small fortune because of its architect.

Moss Avenue is a street that has gone through difficult times, and has recovered. It has many old homes; some of which were used in the Underground Railroad. Even famous architects have designed homes on this magnificent street.

Evaluation of pushrim-activated power-assisted wheelchairs using ANSI/RESNA standards

OBJECTIVE: To determine and compare performance of pushrim-activated power-assisted wheelchairs (PAPAW) (iGLIDE, e-motion, Xtender) on national standards. DESIGN: Engineering performance and safety evaluation. SETTING: A Veteran Affairs and university-based research center. SPECIMENS: Nine PAPAWs. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Static, dynamic stability, brake effectiveness, maximum speed, acceleration, retardation, energy consumption, static, impact, and fatigue strength. RESULTS: There was no significant difference among the 3 models in forward stability. The iGLIDE was the most stable, whereas the e-motion was the least stable model in the rearward stability tests. All PAPAWs performed equally on the slopes of 3 degrees and 6 degrees in the forward and rearward directions. Braking distance was the highest for e-motion (5.64+/-0.28m) and the lowest (1.13+/-0.03m) for the iGLIDE in forward direction. The average equivalent cycles of all PAPAWs were 318,292+/-112,776.6 cycles (n=8) on the fatigue tests. All PAPAWs passed the impact and static strength tests. Powered mobility for middle-aged and older adults: systematic review of outcomes and appraisal of published evidence

OBJECTIVE: To identify the outcomes of power mobility devices for middle-aged and older adult users, and to critically appraise the research evidence. DESIGN: Systematic review of primary source studies involving adults aged 50 and over using power wheelchairs, www.easymedonline.com mobility devices (1996-2007). RESULTS: This review retained 19 studies and identified 52 different categories of impacts of power mobility devices spanning the three vantages of the taxonomy. The coverage of outcome dimensions was not as extensive for adults age 50 and over as it was for mixed-age groups. Most of the research designs were assigned very low evidence grades. Three studies were low to moderate in quality of evidence, among which one was a randomized trial. CONCLUSIONS: A vast array of potential impacts of powered mobility devices have been described in the last decade. The level of quality of this evidence is improving, but most of these studies were not designed to verify causal relationships, and this is largely responsible for the absence of unequivocal evidence for directly attributing benefits to devices themselves and for quantifying relationships between power mobility device intervention and outcome. To raise the level of evidence about power mobility device interventions in older adults, studies are needed that use prospective designs, better-defined user groups, and well-grounded conceptual frameworks for measuring interventions and outcomes
